Fathers play a critical role in the growth and development of their children. They don’t just provide the financial needs for the family. Their love and leadership enable their sons and daughters to grow in confidence and become the young men and women that God intended them to be. On Father’s Day, we pause to honor the physical and spiritual fathers we have in our lives and all that they have done.
“As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him,” (Psalm 103:13). Fathers are the first example we have of God’s love for us as our heavenly Father. But often, that example is not perfect. As humans, our earthly fathers can sometimes fail us, leaving us with a distorted view of our heavenly Father. But God is perfect and promises to be a “father to the fatherless” (Psalm 68:5) and a shepherd to those in need of a refuge. “See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God,” (1 John 3:1).
The Scriptures consistently remind us that God is our Father and that we can depend upon Him for our everyday needs. “In the wilderness, where you have seen how the Lord your God carried you, as a man carries his son,” (Deuteronomy 1:31). God’s love is an unfailing love. It will never disappoint us. Instead, it makes us free. “For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’” (Romans 8:15).
On this Father’s Day, let’s take a moment to honor all our fathers – our biological fathers, the spiritual fathers who have guided us on our journeys, and most importantly, our heavenly Father who has never failed us.
