Massive Earthquake Strikes Philippines 

Operation Blessing is deploying a disaster response team to southern Philippines following a powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck Mindanao on June 8th.   

According to reports, at least 32 people have been killed and more than 200 injured. The earthquake caused significant damage across the region, including collapsed and heavily damaged buildings in General Santos City. The quake also generated a 1-meter tsunami that impacted nearby coastal areas, with tsunami damage reported in at least one southern coastal village.

In Sarangani province, the earthquake triggered a landslide that claimed the lives of 13 villagers. Additional fatalities have also been reported in the province. 

The earthquake is being described as the strongest to hit the Philippines this year. Authorities are warning residents to seek guidance before returning to damaged homes and buildings due to the risk of collapse from ongoing aftershocks. 

 

Operation Blessing’s global disaster response team is preparing relief supplies and moving them into the affected region. Once there, the team will conduct on-the-ground assessments to identify the areas of greatest need and determine how best to serve affected communities. Our goal is to bring help and hope to struggling earthquake victims in their time of need.
