That’s why, for people like Sanda and Laraba in Nigeria, the diagnosis of cataracts was so heavy to bear. Both still in their 60s, they found their independence slipping away. Sanda’s eyesight grew so clouded he could no longer work on his farm or mend shoes. His wife and children struggled to fill the gap. For Laraba, fading vision meant she could no longer manage her small trading business. Instead of caring for her family, her children were caring for her.
Both Sanda and Laraba faced this devastating reality. And sadly, according to the World Health Organization, in Africa only 14 percent of people who need cataract surgery ever receive it.
