When 39 Seconds Changed Everything: Operation Blessing Continues to Bring Help to Families in Venezuela

Oct 2, 2026

VENEZUELA — In just thirty-nine seconds, everything can change. For Theiris, the home her family had built on their property suddenly became a place of uncertainty when an earthquake left part of the house in a high-risk area and raised fears that more of the structure could collapse.

“You create a life, you create a home, and in thirty-nine seconds it’s all gone and you’re kind of up in the air, you know?” Theiris shared. “Where you don’t know what to do, where to go, where you’re going to put your children.” For a mother trying to protect her family, the earthquake left more than physical damage behind. It left questions about where her family could safely live and what would happen next.

A Home No Longer Feels Safe

The damage to Theiris’ home has made the danger impossible to ignore. Part of the neighboring house opened during the earthquake, damaging another section of her family’s home and leaving them at risk of additional damage if the structure were to collapse completely.

“We all have nothing,” Theiris said as she described the destruction around her. With her family facing an uncertain future, even protection from the elements became an immediate concern.

OB Brings Shelter and Hope

After the earthquake, Theiris said this was the first time she felt that someone had truly heard her there. Operation Blessing provided a tent, giving her family a safer place to stay while they face the uncertainty left behind by the disaster.

“I feel calmer because at least we won’t get caught in a downpour like the other day,” she said. The tent means that, at night, her family can have protection from the cold and rain instead of being left completely exposed.

But for Theiris, the support meant more than a physical place to shelter. It meant someone stopped, listened and cared.

“Without looking for it, you stopped and talked to me and listened to me,” she said. “Grateful that other countries have come here to help us all. Because it’s not just me, but many others.”
